Ice Water

In the 1940s, Hollywood starlet Joan Crawford famously splashed her face with ice water every time she washed. This trend is making a comeback among women searching for a natural and straightforward way to achieve bright and glowing skin. Splashing ice-cold water on your face acts as a facial toner, which cleans and seals your pores — with the added benefit of waking up your senses during your early morning face wash.

Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil is considered one of the healthier oils to ingest to maintain a balanced diet. Additionally, it has been used for generations as a skin and hair conditioner. Whether you’re applying it to your hair after a shower or adding a couple of droplets to your bathtub, olive oil will ensure the smoothest and silkiest results. The iconic Sophia Loren reportedly eats two tablespoons of olive oil each day, in addition to using it for hair and skincare. Sophia Loren’s trick to looking young is “the odd bath in virgin olive oil.”

Homemade Exfoliators

Katherine Hepburn famously applied a combination of lemon, sugar and olive oil to her skin to maintain a youthful glow. Lemon acts as a toner, which tightens and brightens skin, while sugar acts as a natural and gentle scrub. It’s recommended to mix equal parts of each ingredient to obtain the perfect exfoliant. According to Glamour, Hepburn mixed lemon juice and sugar and scrubbed her face with it every night to keep her complexion clear.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a trendy product now, but women knew it as a valuable hair treatment years ago. Actress Rita Hayward would slather coconut oil on her hair and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing with water mixed with lemon juice. The coconut oil penetrates hair follicles and makes hair soft and supple. Lemon water gives hair that extra shine and removes all traces of oil. Mae West also used coconut oil as a moisturizer most of her life.

Cucumbers and Vaseline

Placing cucumber slices on your eyelids is a beauty trick that scores of women embrace. Adding Vaseline to this routine helps reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles while reducing the appearance of fine lines. Hollywood insiders say that Bette Davis had a fondness for this beauty treatment.

Petroleum Jelly

Better known by its brand name, Vaseline, petroleum jelly hit the shelves in 1872. This product became highly successful due to its healing properties for minor cuts and various rashes and its undeniable moisturizing abilities.

Marilyn Monroe famously used and endorsed the product, only adding to its fame. To this day, Vaseline has remained an inexpensive and versatile staple in most beauty cabinets.

Rosewater

Rosewater has multiple properties that make it a great member of the vintage beauty team. It has antibacterial qualities, which help to heal scrapes or cuts. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it great for treating eczema. The antioxidants found in rosewater make it a must-have for those wanting to slow the signs of ageing and reduce fine lines. Additionally, it’s helpful to rid the scalp of dandruff. Lastly, the smell of rosewater is known to help calm anxiety and stress.

Frownies

With over 125 years of satisfied customers, Frownies have appeared in the beauty cabinets of many generations of women. The wrinkle-reducing patches smooth fine lines and cleanse the skin for a natural glow.

Frownies, patches that the wearer places on the forehead and between eyes to train facial muscles to stay relaxed, have been around since 1889 and were said to be used by celebs like Olivia de Havilland and Raquel Welch. They were also featured in the 1950 Billy Wilder film “Sunset Blvd,” ageing actress Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson, is seen wearing the stick-on patches in her attempts to thwart the ravages of time.

Milk and honey

Cleopatra was rumoured to have bathed in a luxurious combo of milk, honey, and olive oil. These ingredients are still commonly found in many spa treatments because they have tons of benefits for your skin, like antimicrobial properties, cleansing your skin, and alpha-hydroxy acid, eliminating dead skin cells.

Spray perfume on to your hairbrush

“Having a feminine smell was extremely important in [the early-to-mid 1900s] so women would spritz their hairbrushes with perfume to carry their scent with every swish of their locks.”

Crush Some Mint Leaves And Leave Them Under Your Eyes To Banish Dark Circles

There’s nothing that impacts your beauty as much as when you’ve got big bags under your eyes and look exhausted. However, when everyone has such packed schedules in this day and age, people are often skimping on sleep and relaxation time. So, what’s a girl to do? Well, take a page out of all these old starlets’ books! Many stars, including Sophia Loren and Rita Hayworth, swore by the process of crushing mint leaves and leaving them under their eyes.

Match Your Nail Polish And Your Lipstick, A La Jane Russell

Most of us consider our lip colour and nail separate colour things. Perhaps you’re a neutral girl when it comes to nails but love a bright lip. Alternatively, maybe you love a bold, vampy lip shade but prefer to go a bit more neutral when it comes to your nails. Break outside your comfort zone and take a page out of Jane Russell’s book by matching your lips and nails, either going for a bold red on both, perhaps a vampy plum on both for fall, etc. The number of potential shades that would look stunning in both lipstick and nail polish is endless.

Brush Your Hair Before Bed, At Least 50 Times

The idea of carefully brushing your hair 50, or even 100 times, before bed seems so old-fashioned and useless. I mean, what does that achieve? It turns out a lot. Now, it doesn’t matter the exact number of brush strokes you take — there’s no magic number that will transform your locks. However, taking a minute or two to brush your hair thoroughly will stimulate your scalp, encourage your hair to grow, and help evenly distribute oils throughout your hair. It’s a pretty easy way to keep your hair looking healthy and gorgeous, and it just takes a minute or two at the end of the day.

Try Out A Jar Of Old-Fashioned Cold Cream

There are many great creams on the market, and many have tons of supposedly incredibly ingredients, but sometimes, simplicity is critical, especially when it comes to your skin. You’ve likely heard of cold cream before, but many modern beauty consumers view it as something their grandmothers used.

Witch Hazel Is A Tried And Tested Toner, And Has Been For Decades

There’s a reason that so many toners on the market today use witch hazel as one of the ingredients — it’s fantastic as a toner and has been for years now.

Talcum powder

Even retro beauties suffered from greasy roots! Their saviour came in the form of talcum powder, which they shook onto hair then ruffled up.
