In 1919, Europe was fascinated by Japan and the culture of the Far East. This was the moment when Jacques Guerlain named his new fragrance Mitsouko. Mitsouko means “mystery” in Japanese and symbolizes passionate and mysterious femininity.
Released in 1985
When Beautiful was launched in 1985, there were a very strong dominance of Oriental, “overtly sexual” fragrances being launched, such as Dior Poison and Calvin Klein’s Obsession. In contrast to these, Beautiful spoke of innocence and romance, predicting a trend towards more traditional values.
