I was browsing on Pinterest and stumbled upon some beautiful hand painted Pilcro jeans and thought it would be so fun to try and create my own custom jeans using fabric paint. I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t want to get paint everywhere and destroy my jeans but I decided to take the plunge and #fearnomess. All you need to create your own unique pair of jeans are a few basic supplies that you can pick up at your local craft store.
- Jeans
- Fabric paint
- Stencils
- Sponge brushes
- A small piece of cardboard
- Iron
- method laundry detergent
First things first you need to cut out a small piece of cardboard to put between the denim so the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other fabric. Once you have everything laid out on a flat surface start to assemble your stencils and decide on what colours you want to use for your designs. I decided to go with a floral theme because I am obviously obsessed with all things floral and my inspiration was based on a floral design. I started out by stencilling in the large daisy flowers using white paint and slowly added the other foliage around it to create a nice layered look to the design. I find the foam brushes to be really helpful when applying the paint because they create a smooth application without the fear of using too much paint or having it smear or bleed.
Once you have created your design allow your paint to dry for up to 72 hours and then set the design with a hot iron. After you have allowed your fabric to dry and set in the paint with the hot iron you can take the final step by washing your jeans inside out using method laundry detergent. You don’t have to worry about method causing any problems to the fabric or paint because method products are biodegradable, made from recycled materials and 100% recyclable. Everything is non-toxic, biodegradable, vegan and gluten free. After I washed my jeans with method I noticed that the paint was still intact and my jeans smelled like ginger and mango. I am so excited about all of the endless possibilities I can create using fabric paint and I already started to create an inspiration board on Pinterest.
