Bette Davis was born on April 5, 1908, and passed away on October 6, 1989, was an American actress of film, television, and theater. With a career spanning 60 years and 100 acting credits, she is regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. A recipient of two Academy Awards, she was the first thespian to garner ten nominations.
Perfume:
What possessed Givenchy to create two fragrances in 1957, the well known L’Interdit and the less known Le De, both inspired from and initially intended for Audrey Hepburn. In retrospect, though both elegant, delicate enough florals of immense clarity to reflect the tameness of the 1950s in terms of perfume expectations and societal mores and therefore suited to the “nice girl” elegance of Hepburn herself, the commercial supremacy of one over the other has left Le De in the twilight. It’s perhaps telling that Bette Davis, no spring chicken when Le De became available in 1958 ~the actress was hitting 50, well into maturity by the standards of the time~ chose to wear the ill-fated one. Le De remains today a snapshot of how women used to smell, ladylike and in pearls, and even in the re-orchestrated re-issue that the company launched in 2007, seems a captive of time in one way or another.
In 1927, for her daughter Marguerite’s 30th birthday, Jeanne Lanvin had a perfume created that expressed her style with extreme elegance. It was Arpège, the brand’s most legendary fragrance: an accord of rare and precious flowers (Bulgarian rose, jasmine, Florentine iris) as if they were all blossoming together in an Impressionist garden. A perfume recognizable also by its perfect black and gold Art Deco-style bottle.
Beauty Secrets:
Bette Davis’ kept her eyes looking youthful and bright by applying cucumber slices to her lids at night. Then she dabbed petroleum jelly under her eyes to help prevent dark circles.
Lux toilet soap:
Vintage advertisements are featuring Bette Davis and Lux soap, so there is a chance she used Lux soap. The brand was founded by the firm Lever Brothers, now known as Unilever, in 1899. The name changed from “Sunlight Flakes” to “Lux” in 1900, a Latin word for “light” and suggestive of “luxury.” Lux toilet soap was launched in the United States in 1925 and the United Kingdom in 1928.
