When people think of the word “vintage” it seems like it’s always in reference to clothes. But when I think of vintage, I think of the style of a whole era: the clothes, the cars, the lifestyle. I’ve found there’s no better way to explore past eras than sitting down with a great vintage film. Some of my favourites, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, inspired this afternoon’s photoshoot. My favourite Hitchcock movie is Rear Window starring Grace Kelly and James Stewart. I love all the lavish dresses worn by Grace Kelly. Recently, I started watching the television show Bates Motel, which is inspired by the Hitchcock movie Psycho. Norma Bates’ costumes all have such a retro feel to them, she is often seen wearing a floral sun dress and a cardigan paired with colourful espadrilles. I bought my dress from Anthropologie a couple of years ago and simply fell in love with the painterly floral print. This dress looks great on its own or paired with a colourful cardigan, à la Norma. Every season I buy the J.Crew Jackie cardigan. It comes in a wide array of colours and goes with everything. The Jackie cardigan is light enough to throw in your purse or keep on the back of your chair.
