Hello lovelies, today, I will be discussing Marie Antoinette’s beauty secrets.

Marie Antoinette was born on 2 November 1755 – 16 October 1793 and was the last Queen of France before the French Revolution.

Skincare Routine:

Marie Antoinette would cleanse her skin with Eau Cosmetique de Pigeon, which is a face cleanser made with pigeons. The recipe was popularized by Danish women, and it included The juice of water lilies, melons, cucumbers, and lemons, as well as the crumbs of French rolls, white wine, and stewed pigeons among other curiosities. After washing her face, Marie would tone her skin was an astringent called Eau des Charmes, made of “drops exuded by grapevines in May.”

The final step in her beauty routine was her signature face mask, which is still prevalent in France today. This iconic face mas would give your skin a fresh and glowing complexion. It consists of two teaspoons of Cognac, 1/3 cup of dry milk powder, brightening lemon juice, and one egg white.

Marie Antoinette loved to indulge in decadent baths in her Versailles washroom. The Queen frequently bathed, even though it was uncommon at the time. Marie would spike her bath with pine nuts, linseed, and sweet almonds. She would exfoliate her skin with rice bran-filled muslin pads.

Antoinette created all-natural DIY elixirs for her hair and had a beautiful strawberry blonde hair color under her large grey wig. To make her hair color pop, she would add turmeric, sandalwood, and rhubarb to her hair in a paste.

Makeup:

During the 18th century, smallpox was a major endemic disease that left many with dark marks and deep scars on their face. Marie would wear a veil of Creamy white face powder and a heavy rosy rouge on her cheeks. A lot of women would conceal their pockmarks with faux beauty marks made of velvet or satin, in cheeky shapes such as hearts, moons, and stars. And they could convey different things based on placement. Heart shape on the right cheek indicated that you were married, for instance, while shapes near the corner of the eye denoted passion. Antoinette was said to have applied hers near the corners of her mouth to indicate she’d like a kiss.

During Antoinette’s reign, the Palace of Versailles, despite its arresting beauty, left much to be desired when it came to odor due to its lack of adequate bathrooms. To mask the smell of the toilet, Antoinette would fill her space with fresh flowers and potpourri as well as a fragrance mist of rose, jasmine, tuberose, and orange blossom. She would also apply essential oils like lavender on her body. Antoinette was also notorious for her obsession with signature fragrances, looking to French perfumer Jean-Louis Fargeon to create bespoke scents including the rose, jasmine, and bergamot blend she kept with her, even during her imprisonment in the Tower of Paris.
