Blog Introduction: In 1915, a 19-year-old entrepreneur named Thomas Lyle Williams had a vision. He wanted to make beauty products that would make women feel beautiful, confident, and empowered. Little did he know that over a century later his company–Maybelline–would be one of the most recognizable names in the beauty industry. The Early Years
Williams was born in rural Tennessee in 1895 to a family of modest means. His father was a mason and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up, Williams loved tinkering with makeup and experimenting with different formulas. He created his first mascara at just 14 years old with ingredients he found around the house including petroleum jelly and coal dust! After perfecting his recipe, he gave it to his sister Mabel as an 18th birthday present and she adored it! She used it every day which led her friends to ask where they could get some too.
A Business is Born
This inspired Williams to turn his passion project into a business venture by founding Maybelline in 1915! He named it after his beloved sister Mabel (who was nicknamed “Maybel”). When he started the company, he initially sold mascara from door to door but quickly gained traction due to its high quality ingredients at an affordable price point. Due to its success, Williams soon began expanding Maybelline’s product line by introducing eye shadows, blush, lipsticks and nail polishes as well as other cosmetics accessories such as eyelash curlers!
In 1967 Maybelline made history when it became the first American cosmetics brand to be available outside the US when it launched in London. Since then Maybelline has become widely available all over Europe and Asia making it one of the world’s leading cosmetic brands! Today they have dozens of products on offer ranging from foundation sticks and BB creams to mascara and liquid eyeliners – something for everyone! They also have tons of celebrity ambassadors such as Gigi Hadid who serve as spokespeople for their brand. It truly is amazing how far this small business has come since its humble beginnings over 100 years ago – all thanks to one man’s dream!
